Roundabouts: Hazards for cyclists. British cyclists have more experience with roundabouts than any other cyclists in the world. Guess what? They think they're unsafe, for cyclists and pedestrians. And the statistics back them up.
Transit Oriented Development. This is another pipe dream of the planners, coming soon to Chapala Street if City Council and Public Works have their way. The idea is to combine a very dense, mixed-use residential/retail development with a transit center, thus encouraging people not to own cars. It's a beautiful dream; the only drawbacks are that it's very expensive and it doesn't work. Here are two good studies from the Cascade Policy Institute in Portland, Oregon. The studies are The Mythical World of Transit-Oriented Development: Light Rail and the Orenco Neighborhood, Hillsboro, Oregon, and The Mythical World of Transit-Oriented Development: Steele Park in Washington County, Oregon.
